1. GP RATING Course Outline
The training program is a 3 month in accordance with the Maritime Cost guard agency (UK) MCA, to obtain the OOW (2nd Mate). The training comprises a theoretical and practical study of Ship Seamanship Knowledge which allows the successful trainees to join the merchant shipping in the Deck or Engineering Department as a Trainee Rating. This course is conducted 4 time in a year with batches commencing from January / March /June & September each year.

- Course Duration: 3 Months Theory
- 20 Days Welding Course.
- 20 Days STCW Course.
- 20 Days Basic Theory Lecture.
- 20 Days Practical Lecture. (Seamanship / Bridge & Bridge Equipment’s / Safety Training).
- 10 Days Internal Assessment.
2. Eligibility Criteria
- Minimum 10th Pass from a recognised board
- Age between 17 yrs to 26 yrs
- Minimum Height – 147 Cm & Maximum Weight – 90 Kg
- Eye sight – 6/6 in both eyes (unaided vision). No Colour blindness
- Candidates Should be Medically & Physically fit as per the Current DG Shipping Norms.

- Basic Safety Training (Issued by Dg Shipping Approved Institute)
- Security Training for Seafarers in Designated Security Duties (Issued by Dg Shipping Approved Institute)
- Indian National Database of Seafarers (INDOS) Registration (Issued by the Dg Shipping, Govt of India)
- Open Indian Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) (Issued by the Dg Shipping Govt of India)
- IIW Approved Welding Certificate.

1. DECK CADET COURSE – Basic Outline.
This Course is Designed to Train the Students with the competencies required to carry out Navigational Watch rating duties of an officer in charge of a Navigational Watch at sea, Candidates those who complete This Course are awarded with the international certificates that enables you to assist in keeping a navigational watch and AMSA is conducting the Distance learning Programme (DLP) by giving the necessary study material. With further sea service & exams they will be promoted to Chief Officer and then becoming Captain of the ship.
The training programme is provided by College of Maritime Studies. The programme is conducted in collaboration with Australian Maritime College (AMC), Tasmania, Australia. On successful Completion of all three phases, Certificate of Competency as a Deck Watch-keeper (Second Mate FG) will be issued by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
2. Eligibility Criteria
The minimum educational qualification is “A” level and its equivalent (10+2 years of formal study), within the following streams:
- Science (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) – 45% aggregate
- Age Limit : 16 years to 25 years
- Eye Sight : No Colour Blindness, 6/6 Vision in each eye & No Eye Glasses permitted.
Stage 1: Pre Sea Training Programme
This will comprise 04 months training provided by College of Maritime Studies at their shore-based academy, located at Pune
The training during this time will cover the following subjects:-
- English Language & Standard Marine Communication Phrases;
- General Ship Knowledge and Safety
- Marine Engineering Knowledge
- Monitor Compliance with Legislative Requirements;
- Plan and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position;
- Electronic Aids to Navigation;
- Safe Working Practices aboard merchant ships;
- Seamanship Practical.
- Watch-keeping and Collision Regulations
- Navigation I: Terrestrial & Celestial
- Ship Construction & Ship Stability
- Cargo Handling, Stowage.
- Navigation II: Bridge Equipment and Meteorology
In addition, the Phase I of this course will also include the four modular courses as required by STCW ’95 namely:-
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
- Elementary First Aid
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
- Security Training for Seafarers in Designated Security Duties
This training and assessment will be conducted at Approved Institute By the Directorate General of Shipping Govt of India.
Stage 2: On-board Training Programme
Students will complete 24 months of shipboard training, which will include at least 6 months of bridge duties in a capacity that fully understudies the officer of the watch.
a) During this period, the student’s will complete:
A Task & Guided Study Program (TAGS), covering two booklets of assignments, namely:
TAGS A & TAGS B
(The trainees will be registered to the TAGS Program provided by Australian Maritime College. On completion of TAGS Booklets, the trainee will submit the same to Varren Maritime Academy who will then evaluate the TAGS. The Final Review and Assessment will be done by AMC).
Stage 3: Certificate of Competency – Deck Watch-keeper(DWK)
Students will attend college in Australia for 8 months at Australian Maritime College, Tasmania, Australia. During this time, they will continue their studies in the required subjects and would complete all of the assessment required for issue of a Certificate of Competency.
